Young people are quickly becoming the revolutionaries of today. How can you get involved? Hannah Testa highlights her story as a youth activist and provides steps and advice on speaking out. Hannah Testa is a 17-year-old honors student from Cumming, GA, but she is not an ordinary teen. While she loves her family, friends, and art, she is passionate about issues that affect our planet and she has been using her influence from a young age to educate others, as she believes that “knowledge is power”. She is a sustainability advocate, international speaker, author, politico, and founder of Hannah4Change, an organization dedicated to fighting issues that impact the planet. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

We are currently living in one of the most tumultuous periods of political change - from the rise of populism to the potential break up of long established international partnerships. Femi Oluwole is passionate about youth engagement and this has seen him challenge establishment figures on TV and radio. Femi tells us about his own journey in political activism and how to inspire others to pursue the causes about which they feel passionate.
Femi is a political activist and founder Our Future Our Choice the anti-Brexit student activism platform. After graduating in Law from Nottingham University he worked for Human Rights organisations before taking up the political mantle. His passionate advocacy for youth engagement has seen him challenge establishment figures on TV and radio and generated invitations to write for the Independent, Guardian and Metro newspapers. Femi will challenge Politicians to promote facts rather than opinions and inspire his peers to join the debate. In the modern world, the discussion surrounding social justice has become increasingly prevalent and may, at times, seem inescapable. While these conversations have succeeded in spreading awareness about the issues faced by marginalized groups such as women and the LGBT+ community, this may not be having the desired effect. In this talk Neila shares how the approach social justice activists are currently using could be changed to foster acceptance rather than strengthen existing intolerances. Neila Choomchuay is a 17 year old girl who was born and raised in Thailand. She has a passion for learning and seeks to understand people and culture. As a member of multiple marginalized communities, she was inspired to explore modern day social activism and its impact on tolerance. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Is Online Activism Useless?
Online activism has been heralded as the future of expanded freedoms, a cesspool where meaningful action goes to die, and everything in between. But when we “agitate” via Twitter, or call for revolution on Instagram, are we really contributing to change? Or is online activism increasingly futile? Let’s find out in this Wisecrack Edition on Online Activism: A Waste of Time?

How a tweet sparked the minds of six young women to change the lives of young women around them. This tweet led to the formation of Sanitary Aid for Nigerian Girls whose work has impacted over 7000 women in Nigeria. Their story is simple and their impact is powerful. We hope this can be your spark. Learn more about the organization here: https://www.sanitaryaidng.com/ Alexa Chukwumah is a final year student at Brown University studying International Relations with a focus in Political Economy. She is Pan-Africanist and women's rights advocate from Lagos, Nigeria. Her work includes We Rise Initiative and Sanitary Aid for Nigerian Girls, which are both organizations focusing on women's development in Nigeria. When talking about activism, the first images that come to our minds are often ones of people in protests, sit-ins, and walk-outs. This talk, however, aims to bring attention to the other population of activists: the quiet, the reserved, the introverts who can project their voices but choose to address injustices in alternative ways. As an international student from Vietnam and an introvert, Lan Phan spent her last four years grappling with how her identity and personality fit in the culture of social activism at Earlham College. Through her journey and the people she met along the way, Lan observed a subset of the population that she could fit into: the quiet activists. She started small by offering her help with i4inclusion, a project that combated violent extremism on social media platforms. Three years later, she found herself working with refugees at a solidarity organization in Greece. Entering her Ph.D. program this Fall 2020, Lan seeks to use her research to create spaces that bridge differences and challenge systems of informal power. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
Online activism has exploded in popularity since the beginning of the pandemic. But does the rise of ‘topical activism’ mean we’re jumping from movement to movement without creating real change?
We asked seven young people living in the UK about their relationship with online activism, the future of protest and ultimately: is anyone really an activist, when everyone is an activist online?

What's your carbon footprint?!!
Last week, I got ambushed. And I am so glad I was, because this is the time for me to tell you all about Guilt Activism.
Clover Hogan worried it could be too late to fix the planet. She says she suffered 'eco-anxiety', a feeling of worry about threats to the environment, such as pollution and climate change. The 22-year-old activist from Hackney, east London, set up 'Force of Nature', a non-profit organisation running workshops helping people tackle their environmental concerns.
She's travelling to the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow to discuss the connection between climate change and mental health.
