Madrid today is a modern and exciting capital bustling with life whose history we can explore by strolling down its streets, through its parks, and by its monuments.

After belonging to the Moorish Kingdom of Toledo, the Reconquest of Spain reached Madrid in 1083, under Alfonso VI. Madrid's oldest church, San Nicolás, dates from this period.

Reverence of San Isidro, the city's patron saint, and the Virgen de Almudena, also began during this era.

Under the Catholic Kings the church of Los Jeronimos was built, but it was not until the era of the Habsburgs that Madrid would become the capital of the kingdom, and its cultural flowering would begin.

It is worth getting lost on a walk through the old Madrid de los Austrias quarter, from the Plaza Mayor to the Plaza de la Villa historic square, where one can view emblematic buildings like the Torre de los Lujanes tower and the Las Descalzas Reales convent while experiencing the ambiance of Madrid's bustling city centre.

Felipe V, the first Bourbon monarch, commenced construction on the Royal Palace.

Carlos III, meanwhile, breathed new life into Madrid's architecture by ordering the construction of the Puerta de Alcalá gate, the Cibeles and Neptune fountains, and the Museo del Prado building, today one of the world's most important art galleries.

El Prado is part of the Art Triangle, whose other vertices are comprised of the Museo Thyssen and the Reina Sofía Contemporary Art Museum, in turn forming part of the Prado-Recoletos Axis, where the Botanical Garden and the Caixa Forum Foundation are located.

It was also Carlos III who opened the Parque del Retiro to the public. In it we find examples of architecture and sculpture ranging from the 17th to the 21st centuries, but it is also a place where locals and visitors alike converge and flock for leisure.

Madrid continues to grow today, evident in the new cityscape traced by its skyscrapers, including the Puerta de Europa, the Torre Picasso, and those located in the Cuatro Torres business park. Nearby we find the Santiago Bernabéu football stadium and the Real Madrid museum, one of the city's most visited.

Madrid also enjoys a strategic geographical location, a hub from which one can quickly visit interesting sites like La Granja, Segovia, Aranjuez, Toledo and El Escorial.

Madrid is much more than the capital of Spain: it is history, music, cuisine and culture. A must-visit and a city you will not want to leave.

Spain won three tournaments in succession, something never achieved before by anyone. But if you compare them to the great international sides of the past, just how good are they?

The Italians won consecutive World Cups in the 30s, Hungary lost just one game in six years in the 50s... trouble is, that game was a World Cup final.

At the end of the 90s, France won the World Cup on home soil... and were even better when they won the Euros two years later. By the time of the next World Cup, they were absolutely terrible.

The one team that really seems a match for the Spaniards is the Brazil side of 1970. Their front five of Gerson, Tostao, Jairzinho, Rivelino and Pele is every bit as good...and there's a striker in there too. There's one way they can settle the argument once and for all. Go to Brazil for the 2014 World Cup, and win that too.

Prices on flights and hotels are much cheaper during the off season in Europe. Barcelona is in the southern part of Spain, so the weather is still relatively mild through December and January.

You can explore Christmas Markets, in addition to the parks and other tourist sites which will be far less crowded.
The beach towns along Costa Brava will be half-empty and partially closed for the winter, but you'll still find sunny skies and beach cafes to enjoy.

During a weeklong trip to Spain in December 2021, we enjoyed shopping and sight-seeing in Barcelona, plus several day trips to:
Girona (medieval town where "Game of Thrones" filmed much of Season 6)
Tossa de Mar (medieval town along the coast)
Sitges (along the coast, and normally a party city during the summer)
Montserrat (take the cable car, or enjoy a hike up the mountain to the old monastery)

In this Marbella Vlog, I will take you with me as I explore Marbella, Spain and Puerto Banus for a day, showing you all of the best things to do in beautiful Marbella! To start off my Marbella Spain Vlog, I take a quick boat ride over to the famous Puerto Banus, which is known as the land of luxury and a playground for the ultra rich. Puerto Banus is lined with multi-million dollar yachts, every sports car you can imagine, and beautiful seaside homes overlooking the blue water of Puerto Banus. Even if you can’t afford the life of ultra luxury (I can’t either), Puerto Banus is still a great place to hangout for a few hours. Puerto Banus is full of tons of beautiful cafes and restaurants, and tons of shops if you want to splurge a bit!

After exploring Puerto Banus, I took the boat back to the center of Marbella to continue my Marbella Vlog. I visited Marbella in 2021, and thought it was a really nice place to relax and unwind. My first stop in central Marbella in my Marbella Spain Vlog was to the city beach called Venus Beach. I was pleasantly surprised at how nice Venus Beach was in Marbella for being right in town. The water at Marbella’s city beach was really nice, and it wasn’t very crowded (at least when I went). Next on my Marbella Spain Travel Vlog, I walked through the Avenue of the Sea, which connects the beach with the old town, and is a beautiful pedestrian walkway.

Another place I loved in Marbella, Spain was the main park, Alameda Park. So next up on my Marbella Vlog, I strolled through the tranquil Alameda Park, which is full of tons of beautiful trees and a relaxing fountain in the center. After walking through Alameda Park, the next place I visited in Marbella Spain, was the famous old town. The old town in Marbella Spain is so charming, and my favorite place is the main square, Plaza of the Oranges. The main square in Marbella, Spain is absolutely stunning and is no doubt one of my favorite city squares in all of Spain! My last stop on my trip to Marbella Spain in 2021 was to Represa Park, which is right outside of Marbella’s old town and is a great place to escape the crowds and immerse yourself in the nature of Marbella!

I hope you enjoyed my Marbella Vlog and can see why I had so much fun on my day trip to Marbella, Spain!
