On the final official day of COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, it is still unclear if this year's United Nations climate summit will lead to an agreement before the end of the official conference or if talks will extend into the weekend. The COP29 presidency has released a draft text that calls for a $1.3 trillion in annual climate financing by 2035, but it only obligates rich countries to provide $250 billion of that total. Climate justice activists and members of civil society who held a protest at COP29 on Friday say that amount falls far short of what's needed, demanding "trillions, not billions." _Democracy Now!_ was there.

You know something’s wrong when a child speaks up. That’s how Autumn Peltier, a 16-year-old from Wiikwemkoong First Nation in Ontario, framed her fight for clean drinking water in Canada’s Indigenous communities. The teen, who’s originally from Manitoulin Island but currently living in Ottawa, told CBC Kids News she’d rather spend her free time doing normal kid stuff. Instead, she’s making speeches on the international stage about the fact that some Canadians don’t have access to clean water.

“Water is a basic human right. Everyone deserves access to clean drinking water, no matter what our race or colour is or how rich or poor we are,” Autumn said. Autumn seized the opportunity to share that message with the world when she addressed the United Nations in 2018 and again in 2019. In 2019, she was also named chief water commissioner by the Anishinabek Nation, which means she speaks on behalf of 40 First Nations in Ontario.

As of October, more than 40 Indigenous communities in Canada had boil water advisories in place, which means residents have to boil their water before it’s safe to drink. During the federal election campaign in 2015, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised to get rid of all boil water advisories in the country by March 2021. Now leaders in many of those communities are saying Trudeau’s government won’t meet that deadline.

In October, the prime minister said more than 100 boil water advisories have been lifted since that promise was made, and his government continues to work “very hard” to reach its goal. As for Autumn, she said the idea that time is running out “keeps me up when I can’t sleep at night.”

Click play to watch Autumn tell her story in her own words.

NOTE FROM TED: This talk represents the speaker's personal views and understanding of political activism; some viewers may be offended by it. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/ma....nuals/tedx_content_g

We are currently living in one of the most tumultuous periods of political change - from the rise of populism to the potential break up of long established international partnerships. Femi Oluwole is passionate about youth engagement and this has seen him challenge establishment figures on TV and radio. Femi tells us about his own journey in political activism and how to inspire others to pursue the causes about which they feel passionate.
Femi is a political activist and founder Our Future Our Choice the anti-Brexit student activism platform. After graduating in Law from Nottingham University he worked for Human Rights organisations before taking up the political mantle. His passionate advocacy for youth engagement has seen him challenge establishment figures on TV and radio and generated invitations to write for the Independent, Guardian and Metro newspapers. Femi will challenge Politicians to promote facts rather than opinions and inspire his peers to join the debate. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Jordan Peterson responds to Australian audience member who asks: "What answers do you have to the big issues that are facing humanity such as economic crisis, a precarious job and housing market and climate change beyond banal truisms about cleaning one's room?"

Q&A is a television discussion program that focuses mostly on politics but ranges across all of the big issues that set Australians thinking, talking and debating.

It is driven by interaction: Q&A provides a rare opportunity for Australian citizens to directly question and hold to account politicians and key opinion leaders in a national public forum and Q&A is broadcast live so that not only the studio audience but also the wider audience can get involved.

We aim to create a discussion that is constructive, that reflects a diverse range of views and that provides a safe environment where people can respectfully discuss their differences.

It’s impossible to represent every view on a single panel or in one audience but we’re committed to giving participants a fair go.

In order to be as inclusive and diverse as possible, the program is presented from a range of locations around the country and all Australians are encouraged to get involved through social media as well as by joining the audience.

This is an official Australian Broadcasting Corporation YouTube channel.
