We must recognize that “pleasure is a measure of freedom,” that’s the first ambition writer, healer, and teacher adrienne maree brown has for her book and guide, “Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good.” In our movements and communities, we’re constantly trying to find ways to measure liberation and freedom, and love seems like as good a yardstick as any. What would it look like to love without fear? adrienne has joined us on the show before to discuss organizing as science fiction and the work of Octavia Butler. In this interview, she speaks with us from Bluestockings, a feminist bookstore in New York City about the legacies of the erotic --- from Octavia Butler to Audre Lorde and what it means to not just survive, but to seek and find pleasure. Like adrienne, the book is wildly popular and out now from AK Press.

When talking about activism, the first images that come to our minds are often ones of people in protests, sit-ins, and walk-outs. This talk, however, aims to bring attention to the other population of activists: the quiet, the reserved, the introverts who can project their voices but choose to address injustices in alternative ways. As an international student from Vietnam and an introvert, Lan Phan spent her last four years grappling with how her identity and personality fit in the culture of social activism at Earlham College. Through her journey and the people she met along the way, Lan observed a subset of the population that she could fit into: the quiet activists. She started small by offering her help with i4inclusion, a project that combated violent extremism on social media platforms. Three years later, she found herself working with refugees at a solidarity organization in Greece. Entering her Ph.D. program this Fall 2020, Lan seeks to use her research to create spaces that bridge differences and challenge systems of informal power. Archie the Samoyed is so obsessed with cats that he will become an anchor and forget how to walk when he sees any cats. Even when he's at doggy daycare surrounded by other dogs, he begs to go outside to watch the cats for hours on end, which they call his "Cat TV."
