Place of Thorns tells the story of one of the world’s most incredible waves, Puerto Escondido, from its discovery by early surfers when it was just a small coffee port in Mexico, to the bustling tourist Mecca it has become today. After five decades, Puerto continues to draw surfers from across the globe to the town’s main beach, Playa Zicatela, as they pit themselves against some of the biggest, most deadly beach break waves on the planet.

Join us as we explore the dynamics of this unique wave while celebrating some of the best swells and rides ever documented on its shores. Along the way we discover why the Mexican Pipeline is amongst the most challenging surf spots in the world, and what it takes to ride it. But it’s not only the town that has changed. The iconic wave is under dire threat, galvanizing the local community as they take a united stand to save the wave and their home.

Pyramidens Sahnestückchen: der Juri Gagarin Sportkomplex, benannt nach dem ersten Menschen im All. Sport spielte hier eine immens wichtige Rolle: Fußball, Basketball, eine Schießanlage. Während der Sommermonate wurde der große Platz neben dem Hauptgebäude für Fußballspiele genutzt, Berichten zufolge wurde dieser im Winter in eine Schlittschuhbahn umgewandelt. Das Herzstück war aber ohne Zweifel das Schwimmbad. Fertiggestellt im Jahr 1987, wurde es somit lediglich 11 Jahre genutzt, bevor die Siedlung 1998 verlassen wurde.

Es war ein sagenhafter Luxus, der als eine der Hauptattraktionen der Stadt galt und sogar Besucher aus Longyearbyen anzog, die angeblich gelb vor Neid waren, dass die sowjetische Siedlung eine so schicke Einrichtung hatte. Das beheizte Hallenbad mit seiner Architektur des Sowjetzeitalters zeigt von den goldenen Tagen Pyramidens und erinnert mich an meine Schwimmkarriere vor mehr als 40 Jahren!

Eigentlich hatten wir gedacht wir wissen was uns im Inneren erwartet, doch unser Hobby ist immer wieder für eine Überraschung gut – so auch in diesem Fall!

Pyramid's icing on the cake: the Yuri Gagarin sports complex, named after the first man in space. Sport played an immensely important role here: football, basketball, a shooting range. During the summer months, the large square next to the main building was used for football games, but was reportedly converted into an ice skating rink in the winter. But the centerpiece was without a doubt the swimming pool. Completed in 1987, it was only used for 11 years before the settlement was abandoned in 1998.

It was a fabulous luxury that was considered one of the city's main attractions and even attracted visitors from Longyearbyen, who were said to be yellow with envy that the Soviet settlement had such chic furnishings. The heated indoor pool with its Soviet-era architecture is a reminder of Pyramid's golden days and reminds me of my swimming career more than 40 years ago!

We actually thought we knew what awaited us inside, but our hobby is always good for surprises - and in this case too!
