According to government statistics, half of Spain’s municipalities are at risk of losing their population. These are primarily towns of fewer than 1000 people. But the data shows this issue is no longer confined to just rural areas. People are also moving out of provincial capitals and small to medium-sized cities.
To reverse the trend, this year, the European Union gave Spain more than $11bn for a “repopulation program”.
The goal is to provide small towns with more basic services, high-speed internet, and funding for housing and job creation.

Al Jazeera’s Natasha Ghoneim reports from Prat de Comte in the Catalonia region, Spain.

Dawn Butler and Rocco Barker dream of converting an opulent home in the hills of Barcelona into a posh retreat for paying guests, but the journey is never smooth for this eccentric couple. They miss their first flight out to Spain, and when they do finally arrive, they are largely oblivious to basic business practices, like having a deposit to put on their ideal property! The madcap pair swing from one disaster to the next and all the while, Rocco pines for his London-based band, Flesh For Lulu. Can their optimism – and help from family, friends and Rocco’s band mates – push the project through? We join this unusual couple through their practical and personal highs and lows to find out if the Spanish dream is doomed from the start or destined for success. Originally transmitted in 2007.

Palma de Mallorca is the capital and largest city of the Balearic Islands and the island of Mallorca. It is the summer capital of all Spain and one of the most popular holiday destinations for Europeans. The city is located on the southern coast of the island on the Palma Bay

Palma de Mallorca was founded by the ancient Romans in 123 BC. Until the fall of the Roman Empire, it functioned as the main communication port with Africa and Spain. In 902, the city was conquered by Muslims and named Medina Mayurka. In 1229 it was recaptured by James I of Aragonese and renamed Ciutat de Mallorca. After the death of James I of Aragon, his son took over power, who began building many buildings in the city - incl. the cathedral. Palma was ruled by the Catalans until the 18th century, when Barcelona fell and passed into the hands of the Spaniards.

The modern history of Mallorca is primarily the development of mass tourism after World War II. Every year, over 20 million tourists fly to the capital of Mallorca.

With around 320 days of sun a year, Almeria is Spain's sunniest place to be. Almeria is a striking destination in the south of the country in #Andalucía province. It is a place full of interesting attractions and history, along with natural beauty and wonderful weather.

Narrow streets, tranquil squares with tapas bars, beautiful beaches. The Gastronomic Capital of Spain located next to Retamar and Roquetas de Mar, has a lot to offer...

What happened with the Muslim Majority of Spain?

The history of Spain has been vast and elaborate for centuries. It seems that the sizeable Iberian nation managed to keep itself relevant rather consistently over hundreds of years, and it's often remembered as a powerful, European, Christian nation. But before the colonial era or the Spanish Inquisition, came the Reconquista - something that was only necessary due to the conquest of Spain by Muslim Arabs and Berbers. Before the Reconquista was the period launched by such invaders - the time of Islamic Spain. But where did the Muslims go? How did Spain become synonymous with Christianity instead?...
