Olivia Rodrigo - deja vu (Live Performance) | Vevo LIFT

Acting isn’t the only thing that Olivia Rodrigo is great at. When the ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ star dropped her “drivers license” video back at the start of the year, the overwhelming response made it clear that she had a way of deeply communicating with listeners not only as an actor, but as an artist. Views-wise, it crossed the 200-million mark in just four months. Pretty impressive for someone who had never put out an album on her own. Rodrigo, who proved “drivers license” was no fluke when “deja vu” also hit a home run upon release last month, is fixing that. Her ‘Sour’ debut arrives on May 21, and by the time it gets here, she will have performed at both the BRIT Awards and Saturday Night Live. Billboard reports that the 18-year-old pop phenom is the “first artist to send her first two proper singles straight into the Hot 100’s top 10.” The SoCal native, who wrote “driver’s license” with her pal Dan Nigro, recently told the press that she was obsessed with emotions, and loved her jobs as both actor and musician because they allow her to be so expressive. We’re thrilled that we got to work with Olivia on designing our exclusive LIFT content. A few weeks ago we hit the L.A., connected with Team Rodrigo, and came home with the kind of pieces that will give fans a revealing look into the singer’s personality, two unique performances and an exclusive interview portrait. First up is “deja vu,” and the setting couldn’t be any more fun. “These pieces look amazing on film,” says Rodrigo. “It captures the tone of my work in a really powerful way.” Hang tight, there’s more Olivia on the way.

Paris Paloma has big feelings, and by sharing them with her audience, she makes a big impression. The Brit singer says her songs are inspired by "a need for catharsis." Pop ditties and hollow fun aren't high on her agenda; weightier notions take their place. "Music becomes a facilitator for anything I need to move through," she told us during her DSCVR visit to Vevo's London studio. The Derbyshire native has a powerful voice that can seem both brazen and seductive at the same time, increasing a tune’s emotional clout. Certainly, her breakout track “LABOUR” made that kind of impact on TikTok. Addressing the imbalance of woman living in a patriarchy, it lists a parade of traditional roles while indicting each for stereotyping half the planet. “All day, every day, therapist, mother, maid, nymph then a virgin, nurse then a servant, just an appendage, live to attend him, so that he never lifts a finger 24∕7, baby machine…” The song’s video is even more fierce. Currently getting ready for her first Glastonbury show, we had Paloma in to do both “LABOUR” and “The Warmth” from her pending debut album, ‘Cacophony,’ due August 30. Both the staging and performance are superb.

Billie Eilish's trademark whisper has gained more and more emotional power in the last four years. The secret-sharing sense of intimacy contained in the pop phenom's voice brims with the kind of textural qualities that pull fans deep into the story she's telling in any given song. Sometimes dreamy, sometimes fierce, always fetching. The songs Billie chose to do for our Official Live Performance series have all used her signature sound to great advantage. Both “Your Power” and “Male Fantasy” subtly sparkled thanks to her brother Finneas’ acoustic guitar. The visual setting, designed after brainstorming creative sessions between the singer and our production team, is simple but rich in texture, too - just like Billie's voice. Shot in the Crystal Ballroom of the Biltmore Hotel in LA, “Lost Cause” has a little more grandeur. Finneas swaps six strings for four, laying down a deeply hypnotic bassline while Billie excoriates the cause of her ire. The same intimacy is there, but this one really shows you who’s in charge.

Ayra Starr fulfills past promises and pushes Afrobeats forward on her spectacular sophomore album, ‘The Year I Turned 21.’ In many ways - including its age-centric title and lyrical candor - it's an extension of ‘19 & Dangerous,’ the Beninese Nigerian’s star-making 2021 debut. The constant state of evolution in which Jordan Adetunji exists makes him worth your attention. The Belfast native’s chameleonic qualities were there at the beginning in 2020, a debut year in which he dropped dancehall-coded R&B (“Close 2 You”), emo drill (“Around”), and autotune-drenched Afro percussion (“Black Kings” with jahmiel). As a teen, JA dove head first into the glimmering Nigerian pop of Wizkid and Burna Boy; concurrently, he took notes on the spitting skills of English rhymers J Hus and Yxng Bane. These influences are right up front in those early releases. In 2023, the Joy Division fan leveled up again when he incorporated angular guitar riffs into the trendy oomph of Jersey club with “YOU & I.” You won’t ever hear a song quite like it. Fans and followers who liked what they heard were rewarded with the 9-song ‘ROCK & RAVE’ project later that year. All that momentum led to “KEHLANI,” hisTop 10 charting, career-defining ode to the American R&B singer. “I was posting it everyday, thinking ‘she has to respond,’” he told us. And she did, hopping on a remix a couple months later. For Jordan, 2025 is another opportunity to keep fans surprised. “This is not like this,” is how he envisions fans' reactions to new music. “So that’s exciting.”
