Melissa Gragg (00:00):
Hi, welcome to valuation podcast.com, a podcast and video series about all things related to business and valuation. My name is Melissa brag and I provide mediation and valuation services based in St. Louis, Missouri. Today, we will discuss M&A sports franchise valuations with Edwin Draughan . And one is a sports franchise valuation expert based in Los Angeles, California, and has been a member of park lane since 2017 park lane is a boutique sports focused investment bank founded in 2005. Headwinds. Primary responsibility of park lane is to lead the firm's efforts with sports franchise valuations and due diligence, which also includes the client relations market awareness deal, sourcing and execution. He also plays an integral role in the firm's sports franchise, M and a advisory early stage capital raising and traditional real estate divisions. Welcome Edwin, how are you,
Edwin E. Draughan (00:59):
Melissa? I am doing well. Thanks for having me.
Melissa Gragg (01:02):
This is awesome. This is a little nuanced, like this is a pretty, you know, interesting area of business valuation and pretty niche kind of area. So I think that one, there were a couple things that we didn't include in your bio. So maybe you can give us a better idea of your financial and sports background and how that background kind of plays into your passionate about valuing sports teams.
Edwin E. Draughan (01:32):
Yeah, Melissa, I think I may be destined to do what I do right now. Prior to park lane, I was a professional basketball player for 10 years. I played in Europe all throughout and Switzerland, Hungary, France, Belgium. Also during that time, I found it and operated my own wealth management firm that was geared towards athletes. So clearly there was a passion towards sports as well as finance and business. And fortunately I was able to find a, a firm when I came back to the United States that encapsulated all of those passions and all that skill set that I was able to develop over that time. And, you know, we're just happy to be here at Parkland
Melissa Gragg (02:19):
Well and kudos to you for kind of helping assist other sports kids kind of in managing their money. And so you kind of got involved in managing the money and then this opportunity, if you will to value sports teams now, sports teams, let's, let's talk a little bit about this because I think a lot of our audience may understand traditional valuation, you know, valuing a business kind of thing, but sports teams are a little different. And when it comes to businesses, like how are they different than your normal business from evaluation standpoint?
Edwin E. Draughan (03:01):
Yeah, what I would say is typical businesses, you're valuing it based on future cash flows. With sports with sports teams, it's a little different than that sports teams are a closed ecosystem. And a lot of the value is derived from, you know, supply demand economics, since there's only X amount of sports teams available. Majority of that, the majority of the value comes from just the increased demand.
