Planning a move to Portugal? Here are the pros & cons of one of the most popular expat cities on the Green Coast in northern Portugal.
We arrived in the middle of the rainy season, which delivered double the normal amount of rain this year. Despite the soggy weather, we were still able to get out and experience the city of Porto and all it has to offer.
Our exploratory trip was designed to answer one main question: Could we live in Porto? We stayed in an AirBnB, shopped for groceries, cooked our own meals, ate at a variety of restaurants, walked around day and night, and basically lived like a local during our two-week visit.
There were several things we really liked about the city. However, there were a few things we really did NOT like about the area where we stayed, such as the large number of people and the large amount of construction that forced all those people onto narrow walkways.
The housing costs were a bit higher than we're used to in Ecuador (but still much lower than in the United States) and the NHR tax advantage termination as of December 31, 2023, has us doubting Portugal as a good place to get another residency.
Despite the drawbacks, we did enjoy our time in Porto and look forward to a return visit.

An early morning walk around the old town, pointing out our favourite small restaurants
Please help the channel and subscribe, thank you
Hi there! I am Joseph.
I have been an expat, or immigrant, living in central Portugal along with my beautiful girlfriend Mariana for six years now.
Together Mariana, my father Clinton and myself, would like to show you a bit of the daily goings on around our Portuguese farm / homestead / smallholding and all of the work we are doing whilst renovating, starting building projects, working with our livestock, DIY and trying to grow our little families own food!
In this episode we welcome you to join us in spring time as we show you the absolute best place to buy vegetable plugs in our local town, located in central Portugal.
We start on our local farmers market in Fundao, a great place to visit any time of year, but especially great during the spring time when all the locals are planning their farm for the year, with vegetables, trees and livestock.
Mariana and I buy a selection of four varieties of cabbage and four varieties of lettuce. We begin our veggie garden like this as these crops are a staple for our livestock (maybe a cabbage or two for us too!). Every year we grow a fodder crop for the animals on the farm as we prefer them to eat as much produce from our farm as possible. The veggies will be rotationally planted and every few weeks we will buy more to replace the ones we harvest daily for the livestock.
After we had all our veggie plugs we make our way back to our own farm. I get changed into my farm clothes and talk a little bit about our tractor trouble this week, I know this seems to be a theme this spring with the tractor already being out of action twice. Fortunately this time it was just an inner tube on the front right tire. So I got it repaired at the local tractor supply shop and fitted the wheel back on the tractor.
I drove our little compact 15hp Yanmar down to the veg patch, a place I have missed the last few months as due to Marianas pregnancy we did not have a winter patch this year. I first of all used the tine harrow to break up the soil and rip out any larger weeds. This worked well and I took the tractor back to the farm house to change the implement over to the rotary tiller. This then broke up any larger clods and made the soil easier to work with. I know lots of people will want me to be doing a 'no dig' veg patch, but I am not interested in trying this method, I like tradition and I wish to do things the way my family would have done for centuries, plus this is how all the locals do it and I prefer to do as they all do here. Regardless if it is the best method or not.
My father, Mariana and I got to planting the veggie plugs and it felt good to get dirt under our finger nails again after a long break. We mustered up an appetite and made our way back to the farm house kitchen. I rustled up a simple and quick Mediterranean shrimp in spicy tomato sauce served on local rustic bread. It was very nice indeed.
I made my way up to the sheep barn and showed you all the outcome of mother pigeons nest, both babies hatched and one was half the size of the other, so inevitably the weaker runt died, I was actually surprised it made it out of the shell in the first place as it was so weak.
We took a little look at our irrigation set up too, as the weather warms up the trees and plants begin to rely on us for their water, our garden area of the farm is irrigated by a sprinkler system which fires up out of the ground on an automatic timer. I turned them all on for the first time this year and they all seem to be in good working order. Good news for me as I did not fancy sitting on the ground and fiddling with sprinkler heads for an hour or so.
It was a splendid week on the farm this week, we did quite a lot of agricultural based activities and it really was good fun to get back into the veg patch again. Thank you all so much for watching, I hope you all have an amazing week ahead, see you in the next one!
See our journey to self sufficiency / permaculture / organic farming living in Portugal, trying to produce as much of our own food planting vegetables, growing fruit trees as well as looking after all our animals, such as our chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, quail, rabbits and sheep - Shortly pigs too!

Where to eat in Porto Portugal : THIS is where you want to eat in Porto (complete porto food tour!)
What's up foodie gang!!! I hope you are doing amazing .. today I am taking you through the gorgeous streets of Porto and we are going to eat our way through this city.
If you find yourself in Portugal's second city, Porto, and are wondering where to eat, you are in luck. While the city is relatively small, it is packed with excellent restaurants serving a variety of cuisines.
Pro travel tip: If you are looking for a quick and inexpensive meal, head to one of the many cafes or bakeries for a savory pastry or delicious cup of coffee.
More Porto local food to try: For something a bit more substantial, try a francesinha, a hearty sandwich typically served with fries and egg.
If you're in the mood for insanely delicious grilled seafood, you can't go wrong with any of the city's many grilled fish restaurants. Specifically Matosinhos is THE place to go for grilled fish in Porto. It's a 30 minute train ride from Porto city. And of course, no visit to Porto would be complete without stopping at a wine bar for a glass or two of the local port wine. With so many great places to eat, you'll never go hungry in Porto!
List of where to eat in Porto Portugal in order of the video:
-Adega Sao Nicolau
-Castro for pastel de natas or Manteigara is another very delicious option too
-Mercado Bolhao
-Gazela
-Mercado Beira Rio
-Casa Portugesa de Pastel De Bacalhau (Clerigos tower location)
-Cafeina
-Day trip idea to Aveiro and to eat ovo moles

ABOUT THIS VLOG:
➡ Cascais, Portugal, has for many years been a popular tourist destination for sunshine hungry people. Cascais actually became popular before Lisbon, which is why Cascais is a very polished area that today is where the rich and famous live in their huge mansions.
Cascais has a lot to offer so it can be hard to know where to start.
What we did was to explore the best and most popular things to do which includes the old town of Cascais, Boca do Inferno, Guincho Beach and Cabo da Roca.
The old town of Cascais is super charming and a great place to relax and just enjoy life. There are a lot of tourists traps, but if you do your research you will be just fine. This is also a place where you can shop til you drop although the selection isn't overly impressive.
A short drive from Cascais Old Town is Boca do Interno, which is a beach front cliff area with magnificent views and nice restaurants. It's a wonderful place to come a unwind and just enjoy the waves coming in. And speaking of waves Guincho Beach is an obvious must-visit. This is the go-to beach of Cascais, where surfers, tanners, tourists and locals mix together in a good blend without causing too much traffic. The beautiful beach is surrounded by plenty of restaurants and hotels including Fortaleza do Guincho, which has a 1-star Michelin restaurant that is worth visiting.
Finally, visiting Cabo da Roca is great way to end the day and enjoy the sunset. This is the most western point of continental Europe, which is also why lots of tourists flock to the place. There are a lot of tourists, which is a drawback, but you can't beat that view. It's just incredible!

🎥 OUR EQUIPMENT
We are often asked about the equipment we use to film our videos. Here is an equipment list with links for easy reference.
:: Camera
We use a Canon Rebel T7 for filming all of our talking head segments. This is an entry level DSLR that works well for us. We’ve been loyal Canon users for decades.
https://amzn.to/48V2yYk
:: Lens
We like to keep things simple! We use a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens. It’s a basic, all-purpose lens.
https://amzn.to/48WAGTu
:: GoPro
We like to keep our equipment minimal when we travel. We love the GoPro because it’s lightweight, has excellent video quality, and it is less conspicuous to carry around than a traditional DSLR. We use the GoPro Hero 12 Black.
https://amzn.to/4fvFku
:: Rode Wireless Mic
It was very important to us from the beginning to invest in a high quality microphone. The Rode wireless mics are trusted by countless YouTubers. We can connect the mics to our iPhone or DSLR, so they are great all-purpose mics we can take anywhere.
https://amzn.to/3Z8t1OW
:: Softbox Light Kit
Our light kit is pretty basic but we love it. We used this light kit in the states and tried a different set when we moved to Portugal. However, we ended up going back to this kit and we’ve been happy ever since.

Portugal is a small country that is located off the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula. Due to its beautiful coastline and its historical heritage, it is one of the most visited countries in Europe. Its smaller size makes it easier to get around and see more places than neighboring Spain at the same time. The mild climate makes it a year-round vacation destination, where travelers can see Roman and Moorish ruins among other tourist attractions in Portugal.
The Peña National Palace looks like a fairytale castle, as it rises above the clouds on cloudy days.
Praia da Marinha is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal. Located in the Atlantic coast region of the Algarve, the beach is flanked by beautiful blue waters on one side, and sandy beaches and high cliffs on the other.
The Torre de Belém, also known as the Torre de San Vicente, is located on what was once an island in the Tagus River in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal.
São Jorge Castle is one of the main tourist attractions in Lisbon, as it can be seen from all over the city. It dates back to Roman times, although the Arabs rebuilt the fortifications in the 10th century.
Cais da Ribeira is a charming and picturesque district of Porto, sometimes called the soul of Porto. It is made up of medieval streets that lead to a square next to the Duero River. Medieval buildings are lined with bars, cafes, and restaurants, making Ribeira a popular place to eat and drink.
Obidos Castle is an impressive structure that sits on a hill in Obidos, a small town dating back to Roman times on the Atlantic coast of Portugal.
Cabo Girão is located on the southern coast of Madeira, in the Portuguese archipelago of the same name. At 570 meters (1,870 feet), the cliff is often referred to as the highest cliff in Europe, but at least three European cliffs are higher.
The University of Coimbra is one of the oldest and most continuous in Europe, founded in 1290.

10 Things to do in Porto, Portugal Travel Guide Video Transcript: (OPORTO)
Lisbon is beautiful, but Porto is magical. We arrived in Porto with our taxi driver’s words still ringing in our ears, and we’re happy to say, the city did not disappoint!
Our time in Porto was spent sipping on Port wine, soaking in the views across the Douro River, wandering through the hilly streets, and marvelling at buildings covered in blue tiles.
In this travel guide, we’re going to share a little bit of Porto’s magic with you, and also show you some of the things you too can see, eat, and drink when you visit Porto!
Known as the Chapel of Souls, this church is covered in tiles that represent moments in the life of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Catherine.
This bookstore is a feast for the eyes. The bookstore was even frequented by JK Rowling when she taught English in Porto, and it’s reported to have been an inspiration in her Harry Potter series.
We continued our walk downhill until we reached the São Bento Train Station.
Porto Cathedral is one of the oldest landmarks in the city with cloisters where the walls are covered in blue tiles.
We reached the neighbourhood of Ribeira, which sits right on the shores of the Douro River. This neighbourhood is lined with many sidewalk cafes, bars, and restaurants, so it’s a nice place to rest your legs and do a bit of people watching. Feeling hungry we wandered down some of the back streets until we found a small restaurant serving up local specialities.
We made time for one more attraction: the Church of Saint Francis.
The Bridge we had all been waiting for was Dom Luis the first Bridge, which spans the Douro River. The lower deck carries regular traffic with narrow walkways for those on foot, and the upper deck is reserved for pedestrians and the metro lines.
For the best views of Porto, you need to walk the upper deck!
There was only one thing on our minds: visit one of the many wineries that line this side of the river! We ended up walking into Croft for a wine tasting without need for an appointment, and this turned out to be one of our favourite activities in Porto!
Filled to the brim with port wine, cheese and chocolate, we enjoyed a light stroll along the Douro River, watching the boats bob in the water.
That’s a wrap for our visit to Porto! We hope you guys enjoyed following along and that you got a few ideas for your own trip. If you have any other suggestions of fun things to do in and around Porto, feel free to share those with travellers in the comments below.
This is part of our Travel in Portugal video series showcasing Portuguese food, Portuguese culture and Portuguese cuisine.
