Billie Eilish - Lost Cause (Official Live Performance) | Vevo
Billie Eilish's trademark whisper has gained more and more emotional power in the last four years. The secret-sharing sense of intimacy contained in the pop phenom's voice brims with the kind of textural qualities that pull fans deep into the story she's telling in any given song. Sometimes dreamy, sometimes fierce, always fetching. The songs Billie chose to do for our Official Live Performance series have all used her signature sound to great advantage. Both “Your Power” and “Male Fantasy” subtly sparkled thanks to her brother Finneas’ acoustic guitar. The visual setting, designed after brainstorming creative sessions between the singer and our production team, is simple but rich in texture, too - just like Billie's voice. Shot in the Crystal Ballroom of the Biltmore Hotel in LA, “Lost Cause” has a little more grandeur. Finneas swaps six strings for four, laying down a deeply hypnotic bassline while Billie excoriates the cause of her ire. The same intimacy is there, but this one really shows you who’s in charge.

Paris Paloma has big feelings, and by sharing them with her audience, she makes a big impression. The Brit singer says her songs are inspired by "a need for catharsis." Pop ditties and hollow fun aren't high on her agenda; weightier notions take their place. "Music becomes a facilitator for anything I need to move through," she told us during her DSCVR visit to Vevo's London studio. The Derbyshire native has a powerful voice that can seem both brazen and seductive at the same time, increasing a tune’s emotional clout. Certainly, her breakout track “LABOUR” made that kind of impact on TikTok. Addressing the imbalance of woman living in a patriarchy, it lists a parade of traditional roles while indicting each for stereotyping half the planet. “All day, every day, therapist, mother, maid, nymph then a virgin, nurse then a servant, just an appendage, live to attend him, so that he never lifts a finger 24∕7, baby machine…” The song’s video is even more fierce. Currently getting ready for her first Glastonbury show, we had Paloma in to do both “LABOUR” and “The Warmth” from her pending debut album, ‘Cacophony,’ due August 30. Both the staging and performance are superb.

Pozer is surfing the crest of UK rap’s new wave by blending grime, drill, and Jersey club influences into a distinct sound that feels familiar, innovative and fierce. “When I grew up, criminals were my heroes.” With an intro line that could be applied to the Henry Hill coming-of-age montage in ‘Goodfellas,’ Macklemore summarizes “HEROES.” Over an extremely boom extremely bap DJ Premier beat, the Seattle rhymer breaks down his complicated relationship with the MCs he looked up to as a kid, and the culture that allured him. Kicks from Eastbay, drinking Mad Dog, loitering at 7-Eleven, and yes, even a De Niro reference, the detailed litany of relatable touchstones goes on.
