#11 Creating Version 2.0 Of YOU - [How To Increase Motivation In Sport] - Motivation is thought to be a combination of many things… the drive within us to achieve our aims… the outside factors which affect it…and the aspiration to prove ‘something’ to ourselves.
With this in mind, motivation is considered and divided into two forms, intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation.
What is Intrinsic motivation?
This is motivation considered to come within [‘in’trinsic]… the desire to perform and succeed and…
• The desire to overcome the problem or task
• Develop of skills and habits to overcome that problem
• Rehearsal of successful habits until they are perfect
• A feeling of pride and enjoyment in performing the skill
• Repeated goal setting in order to progress and maintain motivation
Extrinsic motivation
Extrinsic motivation comes from a source outside of the performer [‘ex’trinsic]. These are things, which can encourage the athlete to perform and fall into two groups:
Tangible rewards: Physical rewards such as medals and money.
Intangible rewards: Praise, recognition and achievements.
Motivation, Arousal and Performance
Motivation is related to the intensity and direction of behaviour. That is, the level of arousal and the way in which we behave affect our motivation and hence performance. There are currently two theories which try to explain this link:
Hull's Drive Theory:
This demonstrates a linear relationship between performance and arousal. This means at low levels of arousal, performance is low and performance increases in line with an increase in arousal.
Drive theory
This theory also explains that novices to the sport often do not perform well under pressure and their skill level decreases due to poor habits and techniques. Habits are described as the performance, which is dominant within each person. Experienced athletes tend to perform better under pressure due to their superior skills and the use of stress management techniques.
Performance = habit x drive (arousal)
Inverted U Law:
This law states that arousal improves performance up to an optimal point. Past this point, performance begins to decrease.
Inverted U theory:
There are three rules, which surround this theory
Activity: Some sports are better performed at low arousal, mainly those which require small, precision movements and control, e.g. shooting
Skill level: Beginners to a sport require all of their attention to be focused on the task in hand and so do not cope as well with over-arousal. Highly skilled individuals have the skill well practiced and so do not require such high levels of concentration meaning they can deal better with the arousal level.
Personality: Extroverts perform better in high-pressure, high arousal situations. Introverts tend to do better in a state of low arousal. This is thought to be connected to part of the brain called the RAS or reticular activating system. Introverts have a highly stimulated RAS and so avoid stressful situations, whereas extroverts need high arousal situations to stimulate the RAS.
The RAS is something that you’ll hear me talking a lot about…
Anyways, I hope that this has helped and please remember to follow the full series on YouTube.

Melissa Gragg (00:00):
Hi, welcome to valuation podcast.com, a podcast and video series about all things related to business and valuation. My name is Melissa brag and I provide mediation and valuation services based in St. Louis, Missouri. Today, we will discuss M&A sports franchise valuations with Edwin Draughan . And one is a sports franchise valuation expert based in Los Angeles, California, and has been a member of park lane since 2017 park lane is a boutique sports focused investment bank founded in 2005. Headwinds. Primary responsibility of park lane is to lead the firm's efforts with sports franchise valuations and due diligence, which also includes the client relations market awareness deal, sourcing and execution. He also plays an integral role in the firm's sports franchise, M and a advisory early stage capital raising and traditional real estate divisions. Welcome Edwin, how are you,
Edwin E. Draughan (00:59):
Melissa? I am doing well. Thanks for having me.
Melissa Gragg (01:02):
This is awesome. This is a little nuanced, like this is a pretty, you know, interesting area of business valuation and pretty niche kind of area. So I think that one, there were a couple things that we didn't include in your bio. So maybe you can give us a better idea of your financial and sports background and how that background kind of plays into your passionate about valuing sports teams.
Edwin E. Draughan (01:32):
Yeah, Melissa, I think I may be destined to do what I do right now. Prior to park lane, I was a professional basketball player for 10 years. I played in Europe all throughout and Switzerland, Hungary, France, Belgium. Also during that time, I found it and operated my own wealth management firm that was geared towards athletes. So clearly there was a passion towards sports as well as finance and business. And fortunately I was able to find a, a firm when I came back to the United States that encapsulated all of those passions and all that skill set that I was able to develop over that time. And, you know, we're just happy to be here at Parkland
Melissa Gragg (02:19):
Well and kudos to you for kind of helping assist other sports kids kind of in managing their money. And so you kind of got involved in managing the money and then this opportunity, if you will to value sports teams now, sports teams, let's, let's talk a little bit about this because I think a lot of our audience may understand traditional valuation, you know, valuing a business kind of thing, but sports teams are a little different. And when it comes to businesses, like how are they different than your normal business from evaluation standpoint?
Edwin E. Draughan (03:01):
Yeah, what I would say is typical businesses, you're valuing it based on future cash flows. With sports with sports teams, it's a little different than that sports teams are a closed ecosystem. And a lot of the value is derived from, you know, supply demand economics, since there's only X amount of sports teams available. Majority of that, the majority of the value comes from just the increased demand.
DO THIS ONE THING TO INCREASE PERFORMANCE...
Our feet are magnificent pieces of machinery...
It’s a damn shame that we wrap them up all day long in stiff, rigid shoes...
We use our feet to tell the 🧠 all about balance, posture, proprioception, and muscle tone.
When we put a stiff, thick sole underneath us, our feet are blindfolded to these senses...
Do your body a favour and unleash the power of your feet!!
Thank you for joining us in another training video. Be sure to like, subscribe and turn on your notification bell for when we upload new videos.
This video is to help you increase your flexibility and help you get your splits all the way down. Below are the exercises listed in order from the video:
- Straddle stretch [right, left, middle 30 second holds each]
- Pike with flexed toes [if you cannot reach your toes try as hard as you can; if you can reach your toes keep your legs locked and pull back]
- Butterfly hip flexor drill [sit in butterfly and try to reach forward as far as you can, then push your knees in a downward motion to help open and stretch your hip muscles]
- Leg pulls [pull each log for 30 seconds]
- Half middle split [hold both halves for 30 seconds pushing your hips in a downward motion]
- Leg kicks [30 seconds each leg]
- Opposite leg pulls [if you cannot reach with you opposite hand use the same hand for the leg you are pulling; 30 seconds each]
- Opposite toe taps [try to keep your legs shoulder length apart; 15 taps each leg]
- Middle pull through [reverse your hands when grabbing ankles and pull your chest toward the middle]
- Half-open lunge [reach for your toe for 15 seconds before sliding into your split]
While in each split try to hold it for 30 seconds to 1 minute -- increase your intervals each stretching period by 15 seconds until you can hold a split for 3 minutes [add difficulty by holding your arms above your head or in a T motion]
