When embarking on a new life in the sun, it's easy to get swept up in the dream. The amazing weather, the fabulous food (and affordable wine), the white sand beaches and all the property with large amounts of land for quite reasonable prices. But sometimes the reality and the dreams don't quite line up - particularly when buying a farm in central Portugal.

In this first video of a four part series we’ll share a bit of our property viewing experience and to show some of the contrast between what we hoped to find and what we actually found; it’s not all sunshine and rainbows for sure!

There’s TONS of property for sale in Portugal - some at very affordable prices, depending on what you’re looking for and where you’re looking for it. To be honest, we didn’t really know what we were looking for to begin with but this process of viewing multiple properties in a fairly short space of time definitely helped narrow things down.

Here we take a look at 5 properties across central Portugal - in Fundão, Castelo Branco, Oleiros, Sertã and near Avaiázere and Tomar. These are places that didn't make the cut but all had something that we liked about them.

Left without heirs who cherished the mansion's legacy, Isabella's disinterest paved the way for the property’s relentless grip of decay. The once-magnificent mansion is now facing the cruel passage of time and the unforgiving forces of nature.

Casa dos Presuntos “Xico” (https://maps.app.goo.gl/s8FzyXEkCbG9dSrD7) - This place is famous for their Presunto - a Portuguese dry cured ham, and their Salpicão - Smoked sausage with wine and paprika, which was fantastic.

O Astro (https://maps.app.goo.gl/Wt9YkkMvTFr6Ku656) - Legendary family run restaurant known for their Bifana - a classic Portuguese pork sandwich, where the pork is thin sliced and poached in their special chili laced oil and seasoning.

Cervejaria Gazela (https://maps.app.goo.gl/mRHkeocdLXX8xXsR9) - The Cachorrinho is sometimes referred to as the Portuguese hot dog, but it’s much different - it includes bread with butter layered in sausage, hot dog, and cheese and then griddle fried and then brushed with more butter and drizzed in piri piri oil. It’s something truly amazing!

Casa Guedes Tradicional (https://maps.app.goo.gl/hMp8VVUD135Pavqt7) - Continuing on this Portuguese street food tour we stopped at yet another legendary sandwich spot to try their melt in your mouth Sandes de Pernil - Roasted pork sandwich.

O Golfinho (https://maps.app.goo.gl/AfJqMWvBopt3YoJ2A) - Finally on this tour we tried the king of all Portuguese sandwiches - The Francesinha - which is a massive sandwich filled with meat, cheese, and drenched in a secret sauce. If that’s not enough, you pour fries into the gravy - it’s one of the world’s greatest sandwiches!

On Day 27 in Lisbon, Portugal, I made up my mind to eat as much Portuguese food and at some of the best local restaurants in Lisbon. It turned out to be a fantastic day in Lisbon with some seriously good Portuguese food!

00:36 Cafe Martinho Da Arcada at Praça do Comércio - The first place we stopped in the morning is a legendary cafe in Lisbon that is the oldest cafe in Lisbon called Cafe Martinho Da Arcada. The main reason I wanted to go there was to try their pastéis de bacalhau, classic Portuguese food codfish fritters. The coffee and ambience and of the cafe was also nice. Total price - 9.30 EUR

Restaurante Zé da Mouraria (I think it was closed for holidays) - I really wanted to eat at this restaurant during my visit to Lisbon, but unfortunately they were closed for holidays, so if you go to Lisbon and are looking for local Portuguese food, check this place out.

5:32 Restaurante Cantinho do Aziz - For our next meal, although not Portuguese food, but more Mozambican food, we headed over to Restaurante Cantinho do Aziz. The food was remarkable, one of the best meals I had in Lisbon. I first began with some beef samosas which were insanely good, and then had spicy bakra piri piri, spicy lamb ribs. Total price - 35.00 EUR

11:14 Restaurante A Merendinha do Arco - Finally, to try some authentic Portuguese food in Lisbon, we headed over to a restaurant called Restaurante A Merendinha do Arco. This small family run restaurant serves delicious Portuguese food and many of the classics. I ordered bacalhau com grão, codfish with garbanzo beans and carne de porco à alentejana, pork with clams. Along with the delicious local food, what I loved was the ambiance and feel of the restaurant. Total price - 20.15 EUR

22:10 Oceanário de Lisboa (Entrance price - 17 EUR per person) - By this point on this Portuguese food tour of Lisbon, I was feeling pretty full, so we headed over to Oceanário de Lisboa and walked around one of Europe’s biggest aquariums.

24:22 Cafe on Avenida da Liberdade (Coffee - 1.40 EUR) - One of the things I love about Lisbon is the social cafe culture and atmosphere. In the afternoon I was starting to feel pretty sleepy, so before dinner, I had a cup of coffee at an outdoor cafe along Avenida.

25:12 Solar dos Presuntos - For the last Portuguese meal in on this food tour of restaurants in Lisbon, I decided to eat at a restaurants called Solar dos Presuntos. I didn’t know it was going to be such a fancy high end restaurant, but it was our last night in Lisbon, so we decided to go for it. I started with the pata negra, a plate of incredibly good ham. Then I ordered the polvo à lagareiro, some of the most tender octopus I’ve ever had in my life. Finally we also ordered dourada grelhada - gilt-head sea bream fish. The food was expensive, but delicious. Total price - 60.85 EUR.

This was a fantastic day of Portuguese food in Lisbon, and many of the places we ate today were the best restaurants I tried in Lisbon.

Today I'm going to talk about the pros and cons of living in Portugal, a beautiful country located on the Western side of Europe. We'll explore some of its perks, as well as any potential drawbacks that come with it – all so you can make an informed decision if this could be your next home. So, let's dive right in and take a closer look at what life in Portugal has to offer!
Pros of living in Portugal
1. Good weather
Land of sun, sand and sea! It's no wonder that so many people love to live here—not only is it a beautiful country with plenty of culture and history to explore, but the weather is also unbeatable! In fact, it is one of the reasons why many people from around the world have started moving to Portugal.
If you're looking for an idyllic spot where you can bask in some sunshine throughout the year, then look no further than this southern European nation. From mild winters to hot summers, Portugal offers its residents diverse climatic conditions that make living here just perfect.
The average annual temperature in the inland North and Centre is between 6°C and 9°C, while it is higher, exceeding 17°C, in the eastern Algarve and the Guadiana valley.
2. Affordable transportation
Whether you're looking for a quick ride or a longer journey, travelling around Portugal doesn't have to break the bank. For instance, you can take an iconic yellow tram (or eléctrico) up and down Lisbon’s hillside at a fraction of what it would cost in any other major city.
Plus – they even come with their own unique charm! And don't forget about buses - they are both economical and efficient; you'll never be left stranded without transport again.
A bus ride would cost you around $1.6 while the metro and trains would cost you $4.3. If you are a travel person, then moving to Portugal would make sense for you.
3. Tax exemptions
Living in Portugal can be a real joy and one of the biggest benefits is that you don't have to worry about paying hefty taxes. They are taxed on their worldwide income at progressive rates ranging from 14.5% to 20%.
Taxes are one of those things that just seem to suck the life out of you and your pocketbook. But in Portugal, you can enjoy some respite from these unpleasant financial burdens. Tax exemptions allow residents save money while at the same time enjoying all the wonderful offerings this beautiful country has to offer.
4. Good wine
When it comes to wine, Portugal offers up something special. With some of the oldest vineyards in the world, traditional methods are still used to create these classic drinks – ensuring that each bottle has an individual character that can be enjoyed by all. And with such diversity available, it means no matter what type of wine you enjoy there will always be something on offer! If you are into wines, then moving to Portugal would feel like a heaven for you.
But why else should you consider making Portugal your base? Well because good quality Portuguese wines are surprisingly affordable; meaning everyone can experience these unique flavours without breaking the bank.
Finally, if it’s romanced your after then you won’t find anywhere better: few things beat quaffing a glass or two on one of Lisbon's warm summer nights while watching beautiful sunsets over stunning architectural landmarks - simply magical!
5. Great banking system
One of the great things about Portuguese banks is that they offer a wide range of services and features at competitive rates. For example, if you need to send money abroad for business purposes, banks can usually provide you with low fees and fast transfers through their international payment services.
They also provide customers with more sophisticated financial products such as wealth management offerings, insurance coverages and credit cards – all backed by reliable customer service teams who are always willing to take care of any query promptly.
